Tips for Dressing for Kindergarten!
1. Children want to be comfortable. Play clothes are the best! Kindergarten students move, play and dance throughout the day!
2. Label Everything(lunch boxes, backpacks, shoes, jackets, mittens, sweaters, hats, boots, snow pants)
Kindergarten students tend to forget what belongs to them!
3. Dress for the weather. Kindergarteners love having outdoor recess and will go outside during all the seasons. Winter tends to be too cold in Michigan, but we manage to get a few good winter recesses in a year!
4. Shoes are a big part of our day since we are very active in and out of our classrooms. Flip flops are not allowed in school because children can get hurt on the playground. Kindergarten teachers love velcro! Most children do not know how to tie entering kindergarten, and tying 25 pairs of shoes can be very tiring! Velcro tennis shoes are a wonderful way to help your child get off to a "running start"!
5. When shopping for backpacks, regular size backpacks work the best. Even though kindergarten students are small in size, they have a lot of stuff! Mini-backpacks don't have enough space for snack, lunchbox, folders, etc.
6. A front pocket on the backpack is a very helpful. This is a perfect place to put your child's morning and afternoon snacks. If snacks are stored in their lunchbox, kindergarten students have been known to eat all their lunch and snacks during snack time! Organization is key:)
7. Please make sure your child practices managing their own clothing. Unbuttoning, buttoning, zipping, unzipping, snapping, being able to tie and untie are all skills that need to be practiced at home. With practice most children can master some of these skills before and during kindergarten. A word to the wise, belts are very difficult for children to manage on their own:)
8. Large ziplock bag of extra clothes in your child's backpack is recommended. It is not unusual for a kindergarten student to have an accident at school. If you put your child's name on it, the bag can be stored at school or in your child's backpack.
